Club Racing

Overview

If you are an avid racer or just beginning to think about giving racing a try, then come racing with us. Racing is an excellent opportunity to hone your sailing skills in a fun-filled atmosphere. There are times in racing when you feel as if nothing can go wrong, and then there are those other times when you feel as if you should have stayed in bed. This is what makes racing so much fun. You can always expect the unexpected!

2012 improvements: You are Race Committee

In addition to actually racing, organizing and running races are the responsibility of Club Member volunteers. Serving on the race committee boat is an integral part of the Offshore Sailing Club race program. All regular racers are expected to act as race committee throughout the season. There are several reasons for club members to serve on race committee:
- Safety. As a general rule, it's always better to have two people on a boat than one. We race in all kinds of weather; there's often a fair amount of traffic in the harbor; and there are a lot of details to manage during the conduct of a race, especially at the start. Having two people on the race committee boat makes everything go more smoothly and more safely. - Learning. Serving as race committee will enhance the Club Member's overall racing experience. You will never appreciate what it takes to successfully run a race until you have had hands-on experience. And, watching a fleet of racers will give you an entirely different perspective, a birds eye view, so to speak. This experience might actually help you to win more races.

A duty roster will be maintained by the club members race organizing committee, and racers can either volunteer when signing up or "be volunteered." The preferences of individuals will be taken into account to the best of our ability.

The crew on the race committee boat will normally include one Offshore staff member and one Club Member. The staff member will operate the committee boat and assist the club member in conducting the race. If the staff member is short on racing experience, then a more experienced club member will be chosen to assist on that particular day.Duties will include dockside preparation and making sure all the necessary equipment is on board; setting up the course by dropping markers; announcing each course; executing the starting sequence using flags and audible signals; observing boats to help ensure proper conduct during the race; finishing the race; and returning to dockside and putting things away.
